Short version: The translation path has no server of ours — text goes straight from your browser to the engine you picked. If you turn on the optional multi-device sync (off by default, needs a free account), your learning material — the sentences you read, with the page address and title — is stored in readable form on our server until you delete it. Nothing else is ever collected: no analytics, no ads, no tracking.

1. Information we collect

None — unless you enable sync. Without an account, BelliedMonkey Translator has no backend for your data, no analytics, and no advertising or tracking SDKs; we never receive anything about you or your usage. If you sign in to use multi-device sync, we store exactly what section 4 describes — and nothing more.

2. Data stored on your device

The following are stored locally on your device, in your browser's extension storage. None of it is transmitted to us — with the single exception of learning material when you enable sync (section 4):

Your settings (chosen translation provider, target language, display options).
The API key you enter, if you use a provider that requires one. It is kept on your device and sent only to that provider when you translate.
A temporary translation cache (to avoid re-translating the same text), which expires automatically.
Learning material, if you turn it on. With the learning feature enabled, sentences you actually read are kept — together with their translation, the page URL, its title and how long the text was on screen — in local storage on that device, so they can be shown to you again on a forgetting curve. It is on by default on a new install — updating never turns it on for you — and it stays on your device unless you enable sync, and one button in settings erases all of it. Text you scrolled past is not kept.

Uninstalling the app or clearing the extension's storage removes all of this.

3. Third-party translation services

To translate, the text you choose is sent directly from your device, over HTTPS, to the translation provider you select — using your own API key where applicable. We are not part of that connection and never see the text.

That text is processed under the privacy policy of the provider you pick:

Google (default free translation)
OpenAI
Anthropic (Claude)
DeepSeek
Zhipu (GLM)

Please review the policy of whichever provider you use. You can change or remove your provider at any time in the app's settings.

Audio transcription, only when you ask for it. Two features send audio: “AI transcript subtitles” in the extension (for media with no subtitles) and “Conversation · live interpreter” in the app (your microphone). Both start only after you tap them, and both stream the audio directly to the transcription endpoint you configured, with your own key. Our servers never touch the audio. No recording is kept — only text, and only while “conversations go to review” is on (see the learning material item in section 2).

4. Multi-device sync (optional account)

Sync is off by default and requires signing in with your email (a one-time code, no password). When you turn it on, the following is stored on our server so your own devices can share it:

Your email address — the account identity. Nothing else about you.
Your learning corpus: every sentence the extension kept, its translation, the page URL and title it came from, and when you reviewed it. It is stored in readable form — not end-to-end encrypted — and access control limits every record to your own account.
Deletion is account-wide: deleting material by source syncs the deletion to all your devices, and the in-app account-deletion button permanently removes both your data and the account itself. Signing out keeps everything already on your devices.

Each account has a fixed free storage quota (50 MB). If you never sign in, this section simply does not apply — everything stays on your devices.

5. No tracking — and anonymous usage data

We do not track you across apps or websites, do not build advertising profiles, and do not use third-party analytics. We do collect anonymous usage events, sent to our own server:

What is sent: which features are used (page translation, subtitles, capture, review, sync), on which browser and device type, the app version, and whether a translation succeeded or failed and with which engine.
What is never sent: the pages you read, their addresses or titles, any text, your API keys, your email or account. Events carry a random per-install id that is never joined to an account.
On by default; a switch in Settings turns it off. Turning it off deletes everything that device sent. Raw events are deleted after 180 days; only daily totals are kept.
The China edition (大肚猴翻译) sends nothing at all.

6. Free credit (optional)

Free credit (optional). Once you sign in and claim it, you can use the $0.20 of credit we pay for across translation, speech and transcription. On this path your text passes through our server on its way to the model provider (OpenRouter); we do not store or log the content, only how much each call spent. The credit stops when it runs out and never bills you. The bring-your-own-key path is unchanged: that text still goes from your browser straight to the provider, and we never see it. Signing out deactivates the credit on this device; deleting your account also deletes the credit record.

7. Document translation (optional)

Document translation (optional). The PDF, Word and image files you upload stay on this device — never synced, never exported. When translating, the text of the page you open is sent to the translation endpoint you configured — not the whole file, and not on upload. Images and scanned pages without a text layer are sent as images to that same endpoint for recognition, only when your engine supports images. On the free-credit path the text passes through our server to the model provider (not stored, not logged); the free credit never recognises images — images and scanned pages need your own API key and never pass through us. Sentences you have read can enter your learning material (optional); deleting a document also deletes its cards.

8. Children

The app is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect data from children, and we build no profiles of anyone. If you enable the optional sync, section 4 describes exactly what is stored.

If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
